Counselling provides a safe, supportive opportunity to raise issues, explore problems, and contemplate new ways of handling both situations and oneself with a trained therapist.

How long?

Counselling may involve a few sessions or many sessions. This is something for you and your counsellor to decide, once you have both had the opportunity to clarify the issues you would like to address.

Who comes to counselling?

Most people will at some point in their life have issues or difficulties that could be helped by the process of talking through their thoughts and feelings. At Corazon, our clients include people of all ages, from families through to individuals, with a broad range of issues.

Why a counsellor?

Corazon’s psychological and counselling services are provided by qualified professionals. Our psychologists provide a confidential, non-judgemental service, free of the constraints of friendships and family relationships.

Appointments

It is preferable that people seeking psychological and counselling services, phone for an appointment themselves. Counselling sessions are usually weekly and are of at least 50 mins duration.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

The first session or two is normally a time for you to explain what brings you to counselling. The psychologist, in working with you, will gather information about your physical and mental health history and develop a plan to address your needs.

Are my sessions confidential?

Corazon provides psychological and counselling services, which are confidential and include appropriate professional consultation with clinical supervisors. (Refer to our Privacy Policy for further information).

Medicare Referrals & Rebates

  • Mental Health Treatment Plans

Medicare’s ‘Better Access’ program is a Commonwealth funded initiative that offers rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. To find out if you are eligible, visit your GP who may refer you to see a psychologist for an initial 6 sessions. It is a good idea to book a long consultation as your GP needs to complete a Mental Health Treatment Plan for you to bring along with your letter of referral to your first appointment.

Psychiatrists and Paediatricians can also refer their patients to psychologists for up to 10 sessions under Medicare’s ‘Better Access’ program. A Mental Health Treatment Plan is not required to be completed in this instance, so just bring your letter of referral to your appointment.

Your psychologist will keep your referring doctor up to date with your progress over the course of treatment as required by Medicare. You may need to visit your GP again for a review of your Treatment Plan should you require further sessions.

To find out if you are eligible, visit your GP who can discuss your condition with you and may establish Team Care Arrangements (TCA) with at least two allied health professionals to provide services to meet your health needs.

Corazon Psychology can provide services to existing clients under this scheme who have exhausted their MHCP sessions under Medicare’s ‘Better Access’ initiative. For more information you can pdf download a Fact Sheet (454 KB) .

Corazon and other organisations

Corazon's service and relationship is with the client. As part of the service, at the conclusion of the 6 psychotherapy sessions, a written response on the progress of work with the client is sent to the referring GP. The psychologist may, also, if appropriate, provide a letter to the client summarising work they have undertaken.

Written reports on clients are not prepared and provided to external organisations, agencies, workers and persons as a part of this service.

A psychological assessment sought by the client for an external authority falls outside the capacity and bounds of the psychological and counselling service provided by Corazon. If such a formal report is requested the following is required to enable the report to be provided:

  • A written authorisation from the client, stating clearly the purpose of the report and to whom it should be made available;
  • Payment for the work time and tasks involved in the preparation, completion and distribution of the report.
